Jockey Club supports establishment of Hong Kong News-Expo
05/12/2018

Hong Kong News-Expo, the first facility of its kind in the Asia Pacific region to highlight the important role in society of the media and journalism, opened its doors to the public on 5 December 2018.

Housed inside the former Bridges Street Market, a revitalised heritage building, the Expo features exhibition displays and interactive devices that showcase the historical development of local media from the earliest days of newspapers to radio, television and online news.

The Club’s Charities Trust supported preparatory works for the establishment of the Expo from its conceptual stage, which included the setting-up of a working team and office, research, and the collection of media-related artefacts and information.

With the Expo‘s completion, the Trust is now funding a three-year Media Education Programme for secondary students. This will include guided tours, lectures led by veteran journalists and classroom exercises, all with the aim of developing students’ critical thinking and their knowledge of media and journalism. The Media Education Programme is expected to benefit over 50,000 students per year.

In addition, the Club is funding the opening exhibition of the Expo which marks the 10th anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake, so as to enhance public understanding of the many challenges faced by journalists when reporting on natural disasters.
