Youth Development

CLAP for Youth@JC 2020 Conference encourages youth to discover their potential and seize opportunities
27/11/2020

CLAP for Youth@JC 2020 Conference, which was held online on 3 and 4 November, invited local and overseas educators to share best practices on career and life development (CLD). It also discussed how society can better support our youth in discovering their potential and how the academic, social and business sectors, as well as parents, can help their career development. Around 1,400 people joined the two-day conference.

CLAP for Youth@JC (CLAP@JC) was initiated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in 2015. Through cross-sectoral collaboration, it aims to provide a sustainable support platform which helps young people to transition from school to work.

The conference this year took place online for the first time, enabling more people to better understand and support CLD for youth. Through a series of panel discussions and sharing sessions, local and overseas scholars, as well as young influencers from the sports, social media and entertainment sectors shared insights on their careers, inspiring young people to explore their potential and pursue different opportunities. More than 180 one-on-one networking sessions were held to connect schools/NGOs with 50 companies from more than 30 industries to strengthen collaboration. This will in turn help to develop well-aligned support for youth to understand different industries and explore multiple pathways. Furthermore, over 30 participants of CLAP@JC also shared how they had benefitted from the project and identified their interests and career pathways.

In the first five years since its launch, CLAP@JC has been proactively promoting CLD. It has:

  • Supported 52 network schools and over 200 affiliated schools to implement career and life planning;
  • Engaged with 30,000 young people, including 10,000 non-engaged young people to go back to school or join the workforce;
  • Empowered more than 6,000 youth workers with professional training and enhanced CLD knowledge;
  • Engaged more than 30,000 parents to support our city’s youth in their career road maps;
  • Connected with nearly 3,000 employers who have offered pre-employment training and job opportunities.

Building on the success of Phase I, CLAP@JC commenced Phase II in September 2020. It will further engage the education and business sectors as well as the community to provide policy-makers and industry stakeholders locally and internationally with an indicative reference on CLD education and talent development.
