Fun to Move@JC kick starts ‘Interschool 10 Million Steps Challenge’
29/12/2020

COVID-19 has affected our daily lives, with many exercising less. In response to this, before the suspension of face-to-face classes, the “Fun to Move@JC” project kick started the ‘Interschool 10 Million Steps Challenge’ – an online event to encourage “light exercise” and promote students’ interest in being physically active.

Led by sports coaches, students can do simple exercises such as foot-lifting and jumping while following social distancing and epidemic prevention measures. Wrist-worn sports band provided by the “Fun to Move@JC” project record students’ steps and their physical activity. The total number of steps taken by all participating school students and teachers will be tallied. Over 7,150 principals, teachers and students from 13 primary schools joined the first day of the activity. Together they recorded more than two million steps in just 15 minutes.

Initiated and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, “Fun to Move@JC” is a pilot project co-created by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Engineering of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The project is also co-organised by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute.

Through school and family collaboration and with the aid of technology, the project aims to strengthen primary students’ motivation to participate in sport and instil among young children the habit of being physically active to support their all-round development. Wrist-worn sports band are provided to each participating student and one of their parents to measure their physical activity levels and better understand their physical performance and effectiveness.

Kowloon Bay St. John The Baptist Catholic Primary School is one of the primary schools participating in the ‘Interschool 10 Million Steps Challenge’ activity. “Our school has been facing many challenges during the epidemic. Lots of originally planned activities were cancelled. The ‘Interschool 10 Million Steps Challenge’ activity provides an online platform for children to participate and have the opportunity to exercise,” said principal Vu Im-fan.

The five-year “Fun to Move@JC” project serves 35 participating primary schools and is expected to reach over 30,000 primary school students and their parents.
