The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important festivals of the year, a time when families get together to celebrate under the full moon. Yet there are many families who cannot afford to celebrate. According to government statistics, over one million Hong Kong people live in poverty. These include one in three elderly - approximately 296,600 people.
To share joy and love at this special time of year, the CARE volunteer team has therefore once again supported the elderly visit programme in Sham Shui Po organised by the Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre. On 12 and 19 September volunteers made home visits, presenting mooncakes and fruit to elderly residents. They also checked on their overall welfare, including identifying those with special needs who need follow up support.
