CARE team support local communities amid COVID-19 pandemic
30/03/2020

Facing the unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID-19 pandemic, the Club launched a series of initiatives and relief measures to provide timely support to various communities. To address urgent community needs, CARE team took part in a number of services in March implemented by district partners, so as to support the most vulnerable members of the city through this difficult time, including the elderly, ethnic minorities, those with disabilities and mentally challenged persons, as well as low-income families.

To facilitate the distribution of hygienic and protective supplies, over 100 CARE members were mobilised to support the district partners namely Hong Kong Women Development Association, Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Tin Shui Wai Tin Ching Centre, Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association, Agency for Volunteer Service and Fu Hong Association in packing health packs containing medical masks, hand sanitizers, disinfection wipes and daily necessities, so that the supplies could reach the hands of the needy in a timely manner to prevent the spread of coronavirus amid the ongoing epidemic.

In addition to packing health packs, CARE members also assisted in related supporting services, these include making caring phone calls to the homebound elderly and underprivileged families in Tin Shui Wai and providing them with relevant health information, as well as making video calls to mentally challenged buddies of Fu Hong Best Buddies Movement to show care and support. Furthermore, 60 CARE members supported YWCA in packing red dates tea bag to support International Women Day in action. The red dates tea bag were then packed into the health packs, with the aim to spread the message of love and care to the community amid the pandemic.

To protect public health and the well-being of the volunteers, stringent public health precautionary measures were implemented during the services. Although the challenging situation in this period, CARE team continued to demonstrate great teamwork and packed over 20,000 health packs to support the local communities. On 18 March, Head of External Affairs Eddie Poon joined the volunteers in packing the anti-epidemic supplies and thanked the volunteers for ongoing dedication to the community under the current COVID-19 situation.
