In collaboration with the Hong Kong Guide Dog Association (HKGDA), CARE@hkjc aims to train volunteers to become Guide Dogs seminar speakers. The trained speakers would conduct seminars at different schools and organisations in the public and private sectors. A total of 30 CARE volunteers joined the programme and completed a series of training sessions in June 2020, including sight guided techniques and public speaking workshop. The training helped them understand more about effective communication with the visually impaired and enhanced their public speaking skills with boosted confidence.
Upon completion of training, CARE volunteers started to assist the running of Guide Dogs seminars in October 2020. Throughout the six seminars, three CARE members served as the speakers while the others acted as helpers to assist in seminar logistics such as gifts distribution. Another special duty given to the volunteers was to take the guide dog user and his/her guide dog to the venue. It gave the volunteers a chance to utilise the sight guided techniques they acquired in the previous training sessions.
Since the target audience of the seminars consisted of people of different education levels, HKGDA prepared three different sets of seminar materials tailor-made for kindergarten students, primary school students, as well as secondary schools, tertiary students and above respectively. Various contents and presentation formats were used to meet their needs. In particular, the seminar created a special experience for the students from the School of Professional and Continuing Education, City University of Hong Kong. To comply with the epidemic precautionary measures, the CARE team members delivered the seminar via live streaming, enabling the students to watch the live broadcast in different classrooms to maintain social distancing. After the online seminar, the students were formed into small groups and enjoyed the precious opportunity to have closer contact with the guide dog and face-to-face interaction with the guide dog user.
