Organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and sponsored by the Club for the first time, the “U-Kitchen” programme has received enthusiastic support from CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team. The programme targeted three local communities in Hong Kong, namely LOHAS Park, Kwai Fong, and Fanling. In this programme, CARE volunteers served as mentors for the teenage volunteers. Together, they learned to cook different cuisines and planned community services.
In the summer of 2020, under the practical guidance of professional chefs and CARE volunteers, the teenage volunteers participated in the culinary training sessions and acquired some basic cooking skills. On 14 November 2020, under the supervision of Youth S.P.O.T in Lohas Park, a group of volunteers organised their first community service for the elderly. The service content was designed and prepared by CARE volunteers and teenage volunteers collaboratively. To highlight the idea of serving the community by sharing culinary delights, they made a traditional Chinese dessert, steamed milk pudding with taro, for the elderly. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the elderly enjoyed the heart-warming dessert in separate rooms.
During the visit, volunteers also played some mini-games with the elderly, such as nostalgia-themed quizzes with gifts, Pictionary, and fitness exercises with the towel, hoping to break the age barrier and share some happy moments together. Before the end of the visit, CARE volunteers distributed Club-sponsored souvenirs to the elderly.
