CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team continued its active contribution to animal rights issues by sponsoring the Hong Kong Jockey Club Woof Woof Walk for the first time in 2020. The programme included bi-monthly visits to Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR)’s Tai Po Homing Centre for dog walking and facilities improvement, with the aim of enhancing both the physical and psychological health of the dogs to get them ready to be rehomed.

Founded in 2003, HKDR serves the specific purpose of saving dogs and puppies from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) Animal Management Centres by sheltering them. The ultimate goal is to get the dogs rehomed. HKDR has two homing centres for the dogs, where the larger ones will be taken care of at the main Tai Po Homing Centre, while smaller dogs awaiting re-homing will stay at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre. Due to space constraints, the visits were held at the Tai Po Homing Centre.

Under the impact of COVID-19, the visit on 20 November 2020 was downsized to 10 volunteers. The subsequent visits had been suspended since December 2020 due to the pandemic and would be resumed when the situation improves.

On the event day, CARE volunteers received a warm welcome from the dogs as soon as they stepped into the homing centre. After the briefing session on HKDR and site safety guidelines, CARE volunteers assisted in the moving of materials for freeing up more space in the centre. Then, volunteers had the opportunity to walk the dogs and play with them. The dogs were excited, entertained, and socialised. Both volunteers and the dogs all shared an enjoyable afternoon full of laughter and care!
