In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in Hong Kong once suspended face-to-face classes and switched to online learning to reduce social contact. It reduced the learning opportunities for ethnic minority (EM) students to learn Chinese in particular.
Moreover, as Cantonese is not their mother tongue, its pronunciation has always been a major obstacle for EM students to learn Chinese. As such, CARE Team launched the “Storytelling in Cantonese" programme with the aim of providing a pleasant Chinese language learning experience for EM students, in the form of lively and vivid storytelling through online resources.
It was one of CARE Team’s stay-at-home service programmes where volunteers produced videos of themselves reading stories of Chinese idioms, as well as Disney and inspirational stories in Cantonese. The videos not only covered a diverse range of Chinese vocabulary and Cantonese pronunciation, but also conveyed many inspirational messages to motivate EM students to study Chinese. The EM students appreciated the programme which aroused their interest in learning Chinese during pandemic and boosted their confidence in speaking Cantonese.
