CARE Volunteers Support “Together We Care 2020” for 8th Consecutive Year amid COVID-19
24/01/2021

The Club is committed to supporting different kinds of charitable and community projects, serving all sectors of society through its cooperation with various local community partners. Among them, "Together We Care" is an annual visit organised by Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association with an aim to spread warmth and care to about 2,500 elderly singletons and low-income families in the community by paying them home visits and giving them gifts of goodie bags.

The Club continued sponsoring "Together We Care 2020" with the support from the CARE Volunteer Team this year. Although the visiting activities and kick-off ceremony were cancelled due to COVID-19, CARE volunteers showed their love by participating in the packaging of goodie bags.

From 21 to 23 January 2021, a total of 40 CARE volunteers teamed up with Hong Kong elite athletes and volunteers from other service groups to pack goodie bags for three consecutive days. Since the Hong Kong Sports Institute was temporarily locked down under the pandemic situation, the packaging activity was held in Po Leung Kuk Riverain Primary School instead. In order to reduce social contact and maintain social distancing, the packaging activity was specially divided into three days, and only 10 volunteers were allowed to participate in each service session.

To support the underprivileged in their fight against COVID-19, the goodie bag items were not limited to food and daily necessities, but epidemic prevention supplies such as face masks and hand sanitisers were also included. On top of that, cheer-up cards were attached to the goodie bags to send caring messages to the needy. The cards were written by seven Hong Kong active and retired elite athletes, as well as the students and parents from Po Leung Kuk Riverain Primary School. Even though home visits were cancelled this year, volunteers and athletes took an alternative to show their care and encouragement to the community.

The goodie bags were distributed from January to February 2021 by different YWCA centres to single-living and low-income families in 12 districts, spreading love and warmth to every corner of the city.
