It has been the third consecutive year for CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team to support the Enjoy Learning at Home project organised by the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Lady MacLehose Centre. Through this project, volunteers taught the ethnic minority parents some everyday Cantonese conversation in the form of in-home tutoring. Since the native language of ethnic minorities is neither Chinese nor English, Chinese language and communication skills have always been a major challenge for them to integrate into the mainstream society, in terms of employment opportunity and community engagement. In view of this, this programme aims at improving ethnic minority parents' daily communication ability in Cantonese, as well as enhancing social inclusion by providing opportunities for both parents and volunteers to know more about the culture of each other.
This year, "Enjoy Learning at Home 2020/21" received enthusiastic response, with a total of 38 CARE volunteers participated in the programme. Some volunteers even invited their family and friends to join. Before the in-home tutorials started, volunteers completed a training session to learn more about cultural sensitivity, teaching and child discipline skills.
Originally, five home visits were scheduled for in-home tutorials from October 2020 to June 2021, but the visits had unfortunately been suspended due to COVID-19. As circumstances allowed and with the availability of digital resources, some groups switched to online learning as a feasible alternative for both CARE members and the paired ethnic minority families.
