With the aim of fostering social inclusion of Ethnic Minorities (EM) in the community, CARE volunteers supported the EM students from HOPE Centre of the International Social Service Hong Kong Branch (ISSHK) in making traditional Chinese rice dumplings and sharing with them the culture of this traditional Chinese festival in May.
Rice Dumpling (“joong” in Cantonese) is a Chinese traditional food for Tuen Ng Festival. To help EM students learn more about this festival, 6 CARE volunteers joined the EM students in the dumplings-making workshop. Apart from literally “getting their hands dirty” to assist the making of the sticky rice dumplings, CARE volunteers also shared the story behind this festive food. The students were excited to make the rice dumplings based on a special recipe which allowed them to bring the food home and share with their families.
CARE team has been partnering with HOPE Centre since 2013 and developing a variety of EM service programmes to enhance the social integration with a view to creating an inclusive community that embraces cultural diversity and racial harmony.
