09/12/2023

The Hong Kong 2023 World Boccia Asia-Oceania Regional Championships ("Event"), organised by The Sports Association for the Physically Disabled of Hong Kong, China, took place successfully from 6 to 11 December 2023 at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre. The Event brought together over 200 outstanding athletes, coaches, and team officials from 17 countries and regions. Winning gold medals in the Team and Pairs events granted athletes direct qualification for the upcoming Paralympic Games of Paris 2024. With 11 Hong Kong athletes to competing on their home ground, expectations ran high. The CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team spared no effort in providing dedicated support throughout the Event, eagerly anticipating the impressive performances of Hong Kong’s athletes.

Between 7 and 9 December, 70 CARE@hkjc volunteers provided onsite support for the Event. Their roles ranged from timekeeping, doping control, reception, assistance during the presentation ceremony, to crowd control and cheering for the teams. Notably, volunteers responsible for timekeeping attended a training session on 5 December, ensuring their familiarity with the Event's timing system. The CARE volunteers’ commitment, time and preparation contributed to the smooth running of the Event, and their efforts were truly appreciated.

Furthermore, the Club's Head of External Affairs Freely Cheng, was invited to be a Presenter at the Individual Event Medal Ceremony held on 9 December. During the ceremony, he presented the medals to the winners, including two Hong Kong para-athletes, Yeung Hiu-lam and Leung Yuk-wing.

The CARE volunteers cherished this memorable opportunity to support the regional sporting event for para-athletes, gaining firsthand experience and deepening their understanding of boccia. The CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team will continue to contribute to the development of para-sports in Hong Kong, making a positive impact on the local sports scene.
