HKSI Open Day 2024 x Jockey Club Sports PLUS Elite Athletes Community Programme
17/03/2024

Have you ever dreamed of becoming an athlete? Can you imagine yourself training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI)?

The HKSI hosted its open day on 16 and 17 March 2024, drawing over 8,000 participants. This year, the open day was co-organised by the HKSI and the Jockey Club Sports PLUS Community Programme. The programme officially launched last year, aimed to facilitate interaction between local athletes and the public, deepen the public's understanding of the work of the HKSI, and enhance public interest in sports. The HKSI’s open day also hoped to educate parents about elite athlete training and support programmes to instill confidence in the potential of a full-time athletic career and encourage them to support their children.

Nearly 40 members of the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team supported the HKSI open day, contributing their efforts at different game booths, sports experiential zones, guided tour registration, and souvenir redemption counters to ensure the event's smooth operation.

The CARE volunteers assisted in the "Physical Fitness Tests," which assessed the participants' abilities in sporting activities. These tests were all carefully designed by the HKSI’s Sports Talent Identification and Development Unit to identify athletic potential. The CARE volunteers themselves also participated in the activities during the briefing and preparation to experience the activities and understand their physical potentials and limitations. It was more important for the volunteers to identify any potential risks of injury during the tests, so they could seek advice from HKSI staff on protective actions and provide timely support to the participants.

Additionally, the CARE volunteers assisted in the "Sports Science & Technology Zone," guiding participants through a series of mini-games related to sports, nutrition and biomechanics. These activities included a test for badminton ball sense, a nutrition-themed food game, and a WattBike trial aimed to elucidate how the HKSI utilises sports science to enhance athlete performance. The activities also sought to highlight the HKSI's pivotal role in elite athlete training.

Many CARE volunteers expressed their astonishment at the scale and professionalism of the HKSI training ground, noting that it was their first time there. They were delighted to witness numerous parents bringing their children to the open day, nurturing their interest in sports.
