Since its establishment in November 2005, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team (“CARE Team”) has been actively engaged in the community, dedicating its efforts to caring for those in need. In addition to its ongoing participation in local services, the team has developed a diverse range of volunteer activities in response to social circumstances and the specific needs of various service recipients.
Looking back over the past year, thanks to the support and enthusiastic participation of volunteers, the CARE Team achieved a new record of 27,000 total service hours for the 2023/24 year! Major groups of service recipients include low-income families, singleton elderly, ethnic minorities, stray animals, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and children with special educational needs (SEN). This year, the CARE Team also actively participated in sports-related services, aligning with the theme of "Move to CARE". This initiative aimed to promote love and care at various large-scale sporting events, garnering great appreciation from the community. In response to emerging community service needs, we have also launched special service teams, namely the Team CAREthletes and the Festive Squad, ready to engage in sports and festive-related services.
To appreciate the dedication of CARE volunteers, the Volunteers Appreciation Scheme was launched. This year's Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was held on 15 November 2024 at the Happy Valley Racecourse, gathering nearly 200 CARE volunteers. Before the dinner officially commenced, various activity booths were prepared for volunteers, including a photo booth, a blowing-grabbing game, and a hand-painting booth run by the CARE Painters. The evening kicked off with a stunning performance by the CARE Band. Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Chief Executive Officer of the Club, shared in the joy of the evening by expressing gratitude to all volunteers for their hard work throughout the past year and congratulating the team on achieving a new record of 27,000 service hours. In keeping with this year's theme, Vivian Kong, Assistant External Affairs Manager of the Club and the 2024 Paris Olympic women’s saber gold medalist, along with a group of CARE volunteers, passed the torch symbolising the spirit of volunteering to the CEO, completing the lighting ceremony and enhancing the joyful atmosphere.
During the appreciation ceremony, the CEO announced and presented awards to the three CARE volunteers who logged the highest number of service hours this year: Anna Ling, Michelle Tang and Christine Hui. Over the past year, they collectively dedicated nearly 1,600 hours of service to the community, showcasing their outstanding commitment. Among the full-time employees, the top three CARE volunteers with the highest service hours were Gary Mui, Sally Lam and Danny Yick. Furthermore, new award categories were introduced this year, namely "Best Sportsman" and "Knitting You Award". These categories were designed to encourage participation from members who exhibit exceptional qualities. The CARE Team aims to recognise the unique strengths of volunteers through a diverse array of awards.
The CARE Team has continuously served the community in various roles and through different services. It is hoped that more colleagues will join the CARE Team on the journey of volunteerism to embrace the spirit of spreading love and care to those in need.
Looking ahead, the CARE Team remains committed to serving the community by initiating and developing diverse volunteer services for the betterment of our society!
