A number of villages in the New Territories have a rich history, featuring buildings with conservation value as well as preserved traditional customs. Since 2019, the Club has actively participated in the Mural Painting in Rural Villages Programme in collaboration with the Heung Yee Kuk (“HYK”) New Territories and its 27 Rural Committees. This partnership aims to promote the traditional cultural heritage of the New Territories and infuse rural areas with visual arts through mural painting. The mural in Tai O is the eleventh project completed under this initiative, following previous murals in Shek Mun (HYK Building), Tuen Mun, Hang Hau, Sha Tau Kok, Tung Chung, Ha Tsuen, Kam Tin, Tsuen Wan, Peng Chau, and Tai Po.
The mural is located at the Tai O Community Centre, which is situated along the path from Tai O city centre to the Tai O Heritage Hotel. This centre serves as a recreational venue for Tai O residents and is managed by the Tai O Rural Committee. Displayed on the ornate iron gate, the mural features the famous Tai O Bridge and scenes of residents living in stilt houses. Viewers can appreciate the mural's special 3D style from a specific viewpoint, which makes the boats appear lifelike and enhances the vividness of the artwork.
The mural painting took place over several days. Around 60 CARE@hkjc volunteers participated in the painting at the Tai O Community Centre on 8 and 9 November 2024 respectively. On 23 November, 22 CARE volunteers and their family members joined the mural painting workshop in the morning and participated in the mural completion ceremony in the afternoon.
Officiating guests at the mural completion ceremony included Freely Cheng, Head of External Affairs of the Club; Ho Siu-kei, Chairman of Tai O Rural Committee; Chan Ka-mun, Chairlady of HYK the New Territories Traditional Cultural Committee; Nathan Wong, Liaison Officer (Tai O), Islands District Office of Home Affairs Department; and Master Lam Yuk-fai, the designer of the Tai O mural. These distinguished guests added the final touches to the mural, symbolising its official completion.
The "Mural Painting in Rural Villages" Programme will continue to explore various rural areas in the future and bring more artistic vibrancy to the countryside. In addition to conserving and beautifying the environment, the project aims to promote integration between urban and rural communities.
