The CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team enthusiastically supported the Caritas Winter Elderly Visit, organised by Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre (Sham Shui Po), on 11 January 2025. This meaningful and heart-warming initiative aims to bring love and care to the elderly during the coldest season of the year.

On the day of the event, nearly 180 CARE volunteers were divided into small groups of two to three for conducting home visits across the Sham Shui Po district. These groups delivered thoughtfully prepared gift bags to elderly residents living alone or as couples. The gift bags included seasonal items such as instant soup packs, essential daily necessities and festive “fai chun” (Chinese New Year calligraphy), offering both practical support and heartfelt blessings.

CARE Team’s vision was to make this visit more than a festive gesture — it was a step towards building a stronger and more sustainable community support network for the elderly. Beyond delivering the gifts, the volunteers also took the time to engage in meaningful conversations with the elderly, fostering connection and care. They carefully observed and assessed the elders’ living conditions and well-being during the visit. Then they proactively reported any urgent needs, such as health concerns, hygiene issues and potential safety risks, to the staff of the elderly centre. This ensured timely follow-up support could be provided.

The kindness of volunteers extended across public housing estates in Sham Shui Po, with some volunteers even climbing long flights of stairs to visit elderly residents in old tenement buildings. Additionally, some volunteers expanded their outreach efforts to Mei Foo, spreading warmth and care to even more elderly individuals in need.

One of the highlights of the event was the participation of volunteers alongside their family and friends. Many volunteers shared their hopes of setting an example for the next generation by demonstrating the joy of helping others through their actions. Parents were delighted to see their children’s enthusiasm and care, as the young participants brought energy and sincere smiles, which seemed to carry a special magic, brightening the days of the elderly they visited.
