A number of villages in the New Territories have a rich history, featuring buildings with conservation value as well as preserved traditional customs. Since 2019, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has actively participated in the “Mural Painting in Rural Villages” Programme in collaboration with the Heung Yee Kuk New Territories and its 27 Rural Committees. This partnership aims to promote the traditional cultural heritage of the New Territories and infuse rural areas with visual arts through mural painting. The mural in South Lantao is the 12th project completed under this initiative, following previous murals in Shek Mun (HYK Main Building), Tuen Mun, Hang Hau, Sha Tau Kok, Tung Chung, Ha Tsuen, Kam Tin, Tsuen Wan, Peng Chau, Tai Po, and Tai O.
The painting for South Lantao is located on the external wall and gate of the South Lantao Community Centre, which is situated on the path towards Pui O Beach and Pui O Campsite. The Centre serves as a recreational centre for South Lantao residents and provides temporary shelters if necessary.
Around 60 CARE@hkjc volunteers participated in the mural painting work on 10 and 11 January 2025. The mural completion ceremony was held on 18 January 2025. The mural, themed "Mirror of the Sky - Day and Night in Southern Lantau Island", depicts the tranquil scenery of dusk on the left side, such as the sunset and evening glow that one might see while camping. The mural on the right showcases the vibrant atmosphere of daytime, with figures gliding from the Sunset Peak paragliding to the beach, alongside others engaging in water activities. The mural highlights the natural advantages of South Lantao, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of activities and appreciate the natural landscape, suitable for both active and relaxing pursuits.
The "Mural Painting in Rural Villages" programme will continue to explore various rural areas in the future and bring more artistic vibrancy to the countryside, conserving and beautifying the environment, while promoting integration between urban and rural communities.
