Seven-time Paralympic Gold Medallist

Few embody Hong Kong’s renowned ‘can-do’ spirit quite like Yu Chui-yee, one of the world’s best-known wheelchair fencers. Her perseverance and competitiveness, bolstered by guidance from coaches and unconditional support from teammates, have inspired and encouraged others to go after their dreams.

When she was just 11 years old, Yu was diagnosed with bone cancer and lost part of her left leg. Following her illness, she was introduced to wheelchair fencing and hasn’t looked back, winning an incredible seven gold medals at the Athens, Beijing and London Paralympics. She enjoys the thrill of winning, which makes her accomplishments look deceptively easy, yet nothing could be farther from the truth. “Becoming an elite athlete at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) was a dream come true, but it was tough as I was practicing and studying at the same time.” Seeing how hard the athletes around her worked made her work even harder, and eventually she prevailed.

Benefiting from an all-in-one facility

Yu is quick to point out that “besides our own efforts, the Club’s support plays a key part in making our achievements possible.” Part of that support came in the form of donations to redevelop HKSI so that para-athletes now have their own professional training areas. “Providing top-notch resources and facilities all under one roof makes it possible for us to pursue our dreams,” Yu noted.

In addition to pursuing her own dreams, Yu is happy to share her story with others in order to inspire and delight them. “Being a Paralympian and a medallist is the reward for our hard work. But it is also equally rewarding to share your story with the public and see the delight it brings them. I am especially happy to be able to use my story to help cheer up adolescents and youngsters in Hong Kong.”

HKSI – Hong Kong’s training ground for elite athletes

Since the 1950s, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has been a staunch supporter of sports development. Among its noteworthy undertakings include the establishment in the 1970s and subsequent redevelopment of the HKSI. Total donations made to the Institute since 1997 alone add up to almost HK$700 million. The Club has also been a continuous supporter of the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, which helps both able-bodied and disabled athletes realise their full potential.

Through the heartwarming stories, we salute remarkable individuals and inspire the community with their positive values.
