How to handle new environments and situations?

The school year is coming to an end. Will you be going abroad to study or starting a job? No matter which one, you will be faced with a new environment, and this is bound to make you feel nervous and tense.

Psychologists say that the ability to successfully adapt to a new environment depends on the level of familiarity and feeling of security one has. Young people preparing to go abroad for study or working holidays should spend time reading about others’ experiences and looking at photos on social media and blogs to have a better understanding of what life is like in other countries. The more familiar they become, the more secure they will feel. They should also consider learning the language of the place they intend to visit so that when they get there they can speak with the locals and have more confidence when making friends and immersing themselves in their new environment.
