Age is just a number

For the last two years, local runners have been honouring the memory of elderly runner Yip Lun Ming in the “Yip Run”. This year, the race attracted hundreds of participants who pledged to never give up.

Other elderly runners from around the world include 104-year-old Fauja Singh who finished the Hong Kong Marathon 10K event in 1 hour 32 minutes and 28 seconds. Canadian Ed Whitlock set a world record for those aged 85 and above in the half marathon with a time of 1 hour 50 minutes and 47 seconds. On the ladies’ side, there was Ida Keeling who at 100 years old set a new record in the 100m dash of 1 minute 17 seconds and 33 tenths of a second in the category of 100 years old and above, while 92-year-old Harriette Thompson became the oldest woman to complete a marathon when she did so in a time of 7 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds. These elderly runners have really expanded the boundaries for what is possible!

Yip once said: “If you’re not able to run the marathon, run the half-marathon. If you’re not able to run the half-marathon, run the 10K race.” With the right frame of mind and training, anybody of any age can reach their full potential!
