To promote and encourage public participation in glass bottle recycling, the Club’s Charities Trust supported the Hong Chi Association in 2010 to launch the “Hong Chi Jockey Club Glass Bottle Recycling Project”. The initiative entered its second phase in 2013, thereby enabling the involvement of more private housing estates and increasing collection points and capacity.
The Project was the first-ever citywide initiative to marry the promotion of green living with training for the disabled. To date, about 3,900 tonnes of glass bottles have been collected and recycled into eco-bricks, and many intellectually-challenged trainees have received vocational opportunities that promote social inclusion.
The Club’s Charities Trust launched the third phase of the Project in February 2016. During this new phase, it is expected that a further 2,200 tonnes of glass will be collected, creating over 160 vocational opportunities for trainees with intellectual disabilities.
