Green Christmas, Green Earth!

If you choose to eat less meat and more vegetables during the Christmas holidays, what kind of positive effect can you expect to see on the environment and CO2 emissions?

  • Eating less beef and mutton can indirectly reduce greenhouse gases, since cattle and sheep are responsible for releasing methane that is 23 times more potent than CO2 emissions.
  • CO2 emissions from the production of 1kg of beef and tofu are 27kg and 2kg respectively. So eating vegetables instead of meat can help to lessen the emission of greenhouse gases.
  • Indirect water consumption per person per day is 1,611litres more for meat eaters than vegetarians. That’s equal to about 20 showers!

So one veggie meal for each person, or even just one vegetarian meal a week, can be good for the environment. Having said that, it has to taste good or else no one would keep eating it! Let’s learn from Green Monday chef Mabel how to make Eggplant Lasagna – a colourful and tasty main dish that you can serve to family and friends during the holidays!
