Track Cycling – Breaking the wind

Jersey, helmet, sport glasses … the gear that cyclists use is always stylish. But in addition to looking cool, how it functions is even more important.

During track cycling events, the majority of wind resistance comes from the helmet and jersey rather than the bike; therefore a key element is how the gear is designed.

Cyclists will usually wear a completely round, sealed, aerodynamic helmet. Helmets will sometimes even come with a face shield to further cut down wind resistance. For endurance events, road racing helmets with holes are often used, as they are more comfortable.

Cyclists generally wear one-piece cycling suits that have a golf-ball-like surface that is more aerodynamic and allows them to go faster than regular sports clothes. This type of surface also can protect the body during an accident as it provides friction.

After learning about a cyclist’s clothing and gear, it’s time for the much-anticipated video to begin! Have a listen as former Hong Kong team coach Dorming Chau explains our main attraction – the track cycling bike!
