Track Cycling – Not your usual jersey

In sports news, we often hear of cycling champions winning different-coloured jerseys, like the rainbow jersey, yellow jersey, etc. Each one represents the wearer’s tremendous fighting spirit and perseverance.

Each bicycle racing discipline awards a rainbow jersey, which is the highest honour, to the competitor who wins their respective world championship. To participate in the World Championships, you first need to accumulate enough points in Level 1 races and in the annual three-round Track Cycling World Cup. A world champion can then wear the rainbow jersey throughout the year when competing in the same category (except in the Olympic Games). Hong Kong has had three adults and one junior adult win the rainbow jersey. Pretty impressive, right!

In the famous Tour de France and many other large-scale events, the yellow jersey is given to honor the rider who has taken the lead in total results. Riders that win multi-day events are also eligible to wear the yellow jersey when receiving their trophy. The yellow jersey is truly a status symbol.
